The primary goal for truck driver should be to find true independence.
The one thing that you should remember is it is definitely worth it.
The biggest lesson I always remember from the companies I started in comparison to corporate jobs that I worked was it takes about the same amount of effort to be SUCCESSFUL at either one. The only difference is you only get to own your effort in one option.
This is what my family always harped and this is what I recommend for you. GO INDEPENDENT.
Being a company driver should always be a temporary job here’s why:
- Do you want the company in control of your money? This is why big trucking companies are in love with people who are inexperienced but good drivers. This will allow them to pay these newbies the lowest amount in the industry and pocket the difference. In the long run they loose out as younger drivers usually are involved in more accidents but who’s thinking long term anymore these days?
- Do you want REAL control over when and where your truck goes? People get hacked off when they are made to deadhead 200 miles this way or that way with no load all because some dispatcher screwed up. This can affect your money and the truth is you can book your own loads its not that hard.
- Are you tired of politics and bull crap? If you talk to enough truckers you’ll realize they all have stories of some favortism going on. One way or another someone always feels like they are getting the short end of the stick. You can never quite be sure can you?
Making your first delivery under your own independent authority is such a great feeling. To know that you only have to pay for your truck and fuel and YOU keep the difference. It makes a HUGE difference pun intended.
What do you think have you considered going independent?
